Dialectical Behavior Therapy in Colorado

When you’re struggling with emotional regulation skills, relationship challenges, or co-occurring disorders, finding the right behavioral therapy approach can make all the difference. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) offers a proven path forward for individuals seeking lasting change and emotional balance. At Acqua Recovery’s Colorado locations, we integrate DBT Colorado programming into our comprehensive addiction therapy program, providing clients with effective coping strategies and support needed for meaningful recovery.

Dr. Marsha Linehan originally developed Dialectical Behavioral Therapy to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder and suicidal ideation, but research has shown its effectiveness extends far beyond its original application. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), DBT has demonstrated significant effectiveness in treating substance use disorders, particularly when combined with standard addiction treatment approaches. Our Colorado treatment centers in Fort Collins and Boulder utilize this evidence-based modality as a cornerstone of our therapeutic programming.

What Is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a comprehensive cognitive-behavioral therapy treatment that emphasizes the balance between acceptance and change. The term “dialectical” refers to the synthesis of opposites—helping clients accept themselves as they are while simultaneously working toward positive change. This approach recognizes that two seemingly contradictory things can be true at the same time, which proves especially valuable for individuals dealing with intense emotional responses and challenging life circumstances.

DBT focuses on four core skill modules that work together to create lasting behavioral strategies and emotional change:

  • Mindfulness forms the foundation of DBT practice. These mindfulness exercises help you stay present in the moment without judgment, allowing you to observe your thoughts and feelings without becoming overwhelmed by them. Developing an emotional mind, balanced with reason, creates the awareness necessary for implementing other Dialectical Behavioral strategies effectively.
  • Distress tolerance skills teach you how to cope with painful situations without making them worse through impulsive or self-destructive behaviors. Rather than turning to substances or harmful coping mechanisms when emotions become intense, you learn healthy coping strategies to tolerate distress until you can address the situation more effectively.
  • Emotion regulation helps you understand, name, and manage your emotional experiences. These emotional regulation skills reduce emotional vulnerability and help you decrease the intensity and duration of painful emotions. For individuals experiencing emotional dysregulation or emotional instability, these skills prove essential for preventing relapse and building emotional resilience in recovery.
  • Interpersonal effectiveness skills improve your ability to communicate your needs, set boundaries, and maintain healthy relationships. These skills help you ask for what you need, say no when necessary, and navigate conflict while maintaining self-respect and preserving important relationships.

DBT for Substance Use Disorders and Co-Occurring Conditions

Many individuals who struggle with substance use disorders also experience difficulty managing intense emotions and co-occurring disorders. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), approximately 50% of individuals with substance use disorders also have a co-occurring mental health disorder. DBT Colorado treatment addresses both conditions simultaneously, teaching practical behavioral strategies that support recovery from addiction while improving overall emotional well-being.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy proves particularly effective for individuals experiencing anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and other psychological disorders alongside substance use concerns.

At our Colorado treatment locations, we integrate DBT throughout our programming to ensure clients receive comprehensive, evidence-based care. Whether you’re seeking treatment for substance use, mental health concerns, or both, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy provides the tools necessary for creating meaningful change.
