Making this shift frees the person from attempting to control experiences. They become open to values-based actions. Broader goals provide direction for identifying values and making commitments to actions that align with those values.
Turning to drugs or alcohol as a way out is not the direct target for this form of therapy. Rather, treatment focuses on decreasing the influence painful emotional events have in choosing a controlled substance.
Six Basic Themes of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
For example, there are six core themes of ACT that allow psychological flexibility, which include:
- Acceptance. Not accepting reality finds a person repeating patterns that cause the same emotional and physical problems. In fact, acceptance positions the person to begin changing those patterns.
- Defusion. The person learns how to detach their behavior and identity from thoughts. Specifically, this process gives them a chance to examine their thoughts without putting unhealthy actions behind those thoughts.
- Presence. Conscious mindfulness of the present moment helps to restore mental balance and harmony. Furthermore, this stage is a helpful strategy to avoiding relapse after recovering from substance abuse.
- Self-awareness. The ability to effect personal change and self-empowerment are the results of this process.
- Value identification. This helps to build a new foundation for living by their own values after rejecting society or other people’s values.
- Action. Work in every session is leading to making positive changes. Overall, making an affirmative commitment to stop using is the best way to position them for a healthy life.

For the person battling addiction, the simplest solution to a problem is to drink or drug it away. The real issue occurs the next day when the problem still exists and is now exacerbated by the addiction.
